Working with a team building facilitator

A facilitator turns a set of activities into a session with a point. They read the room, adjust the pace, keep everyone involved and lead the conversation afterwards that links the activity to how the team works.

Brief them properly

Share the team's context: recent changes, what is going well, what is not, and what leadership hopes to see after the session. A facilitator who understands the background can steer the day towards it.

Protect the debrief

The debrief is where most of the value sits. Do not let a long lunch or a late start squeeze it. Agree its length in advance and keep it in the programme.

Decide your own role

Managers should decide whether to join in as participants or step back. Either can work, but it should be a conscious choice.
